The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

Continue work to combat COVID-19 with rigor and precision
President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez called to continue work to contain the virus with great precision and rigor – and the support of the population – since the success of our efforts to confront the pandemic depend on these principles, during the March 31 meeting of the Cuban government, to review the COVID-19 situation in the country, make decisions to advance the effort, and evaluate those made previously, as has become the norm every afternoon.

News from a community in quarantine
Just like the rest of Cuba, residents of the Camilo Cienfuegos community go out onto their balconies at nine o’clock every night, to applaud heath care workers fighting COVID-19. This simple tribute to those who care for our people and risk their lives in other latitudes – wherever they are requested, given the confidence Cuban health professionals inspire worldwide – is the only time they can see each other, or at least hear each other, in this small town in Pinar del Rio, which was placed in quarantine March 31.

Cuba musicians offer concerts online, on radio and television
With the performance of Cuban singer-songwriter Eduardo Sosa, the joint transmission of online concerts #EstamosContigo#MusicosPorCuba began March 25, an initiative in which several cultural institutions of the country are participating, to support stay-at-home efforts to stem the spread of the new coronavirus SARS CoV-2. The Ministry’s digital platforms, based in Havana, are linked with Santiago de Cuba, to broadcast encouraging messages from musicians in the eastern part of the country, as well.

At the people’s order

Political Bureau approves suspension of May Day parade and postponement of ANAP Congress
The First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, presided a meeting of the Political Bureau yesterday, during which the decision was made to cancel May Day parades, and postpone the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) Congress. New measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 were also discussed.

Ministry of Public Health reports a total of 212 cases of COVID-19 and 12 patients who have recovered
The Ministry’s report, closed at midnight March 31, indicated that 26 new cases were confirmed positive, among 444 patients tested during the previous 24 hours, including 25 Cubans and one Spanish citizen, for a total of 212 in the country, since March 11. Of the 25 Cubans, eight have a source of infection abroad: the United States and Mexico (3 each), Chile and Spain, (one each), while 10 were contacts of confirmed cases and seven of travelers from abroad.

Covid-19: Cuba Deserves Relief From US Sanctions
On March 25, as a team of Cuban doctors and medical technicians set up field hospitals in the Lombardy region of Northern Italy to treat thousands of Italians infected with Covid-19, the State Department issued an absurd warning, via Twitter, against accepting Cuban humanitarian support. “Host countries seeking Cuba’s help for #COVID-19 should scrutinize agreements and end labor abuses,” the message stated.

Cuban sports give Covid-19 no chance
The COVID-19 pandemic brought sport activities to a halt around the world. faced with the situation, Cuba suspended all competitive events, as well as the preparation of its athletes for the Tokyo Olympic Games, with the primary objective of protecting the health of all members of our sports movement. In a press conference held in the Ciudad Deportiva, senior officials of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder) offered details of actions.

In the face of adversity, Cuba turns to its strengths
Amidst the battle Cuba is waging to control the expansion of Covid-19 in the country, the Council of Ministers, headed by President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, met, as they do every month, to make decisions on the economic and social life of the nation. The highest body of the Cuban government approved the creation of a task force charged with developing new measures to strengthen efforts to combat the new coronavirus.

IPK, Cuba’s command center
With the fundamental mission of controlling, preventing and treating infectious diseases that affect the Cuban population, the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK) is currently functioning as Cuba’s command center in the Public Health system’s battle to develop prevention and training strategies to confront the global threat of the new SARS COV-2 coronavirus. The institution’s National Reference Laboratory, of international prestige, is one of the three responsible for confirming cases of Covid-19, the disease resulting from this dangerous virus.
