Preparatory courses for university entrance about to begin

BEGINNING October 5, preparatory courses for higher education entrance exams, lasting 28 or 56 weeks, will start as part of the country’s adult education system, which since 2009 has offered the opportunity to workers or those who have been out of the classroom for a long time and wish to undertake university studies. Adult education is currently focused on these programs, with the hope of perfecting them, as noted by the Master of Science graduate, Regla Lovaina, acting director of this department of the Education Ministry.

The First Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, met with almost a hundred representatives of different religious institutions and fraternal associations on Monday, September 14, at the Party Central Committee, as part of the dialogues initiated a little over 30 years ago, with the first meeting between Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro and the Cuban Council of Churches.

High of 38.2 degrees in Havana!

A new record was set on Saturday, September 12 in Havana, as the temperature reached a maximum of 38.2 degrees Celsius at the Casablanca weather station, surpassing the previous record of 37 degrees, on April 26 of this year. Speaking to Granma, Armando Caymares, of the National Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology, noted that Saturday also saw records for the month of September in Indio Hatuey at 36.9°C and Jovellanos at 36.5°C, both in the province of Matanzas.

Municipal committees and bureaus which will lead the Party’s work locally were also elected.

Cuba-U.S. Bilateral Commission holds first meeting

On the morning of Friday September 11, the Cuban and U.S. delegations initiated the first Bilateral Commission meeting, with the aim of establishing an agenda of topics to be addressed following the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States. The Cuban delegation was led by Josefina Vidal Ferreiro, the Foreign Ministry’s director general for the United States, while the U.S. State Department’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for South America and Cuba, Edward Alex Lee, presided the U.S. delegation.

Council of State agrees to pardon 3,522 prisoners

The Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, on the occasion of the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis, and in line with measures taken on the previous visits of Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI, agreed to pardon 3,522 prisoners, taking into account the nature of the offenses for which individuals were punished, their behavior in prison, the length of sentences and health reasons.

One of the most recent episodes: the case of a group of Cuban doctors who, having abandoned their mission in Venezuela and sought asylum in the US Embassy in Colombia, had taken months without any response from the US authorities.
