High Level Segment of AU Summit Starts

Attended by over fifty heads of State and Government, the high-level segment of the 25th Summit of the African Union began in this capital today.

The meeting, held at the Sandton Convention Center was preceded by a set of other encounters that paved the way for the Assembly running today and tomorrow.

Cuba is among countries invited to the event with a delegation led by Vice President of the State Council Salvador Valdes Mesa.

Cuba is among countries invited to the event with a delegation led by Vice President of the State Council Salvador Valdes Mesa.

Valdes Mesa arrived to South Africa last Friday on a work visit and since then he has held bilateral contacts with leaders of the South African Communist Party, of the Congress of South African Trade Unions and of the African National Congress.

According to press reports, issues to be discussed in the Summit include peace and security, with emphasis in the political crisis in Burundi.

The slogan for this 25th Summit is “Year of Women’s Empowerment and Africa Development towards the Agenda 2063.”

The African Union groups 54 states but Morocco, and their most important decisions are made by the Assembly of the African Union, a meeting of heads of State and Government of member countries.

The headquarters of AU, the AU Commission, is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
