Sao Paulo Forum Calls for Freedom of Cuban 5

Lima, Nov 26 (Prensa Latina) The Sao Paulo Forum of progressive parties from Latin American demanded today the immediate release of five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in the United States for more than 14 years.

The statement was voiced at a meeting organized by the Andean Amazon Secretariat, and asks U.S. President Barack Obama “to use all relevant resources to release the Five so they can return their homeland.”

It also calls for implementing all necessary solidarity actions “in order to add our voices” to the calls for the release of the Cuban Five, as they are known internationally, and make known the unjust situation they are experiencing.

The call will be submitted to the U.S. government through the Latin American foreign ministries, and reaffirms its solidarity with Cuba and its goals of socialist construction, it says.

It also states that anti-terrorists Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Rene Gonzalez (the latter under supervised release in the United States) have maintained an exemplary attitude since they were detained in 1998, while monitoring terrorist activity carried out by anti-Cuban groups based in Florida.
