Iran Assesses Annan’s Plan to Solve Syrian Crisis

Tehran, Jul 24 (Prensa Latina) Iran assessed today as a “better way to solve the Syrian crisis” the plan made by UN and Arab League (AL) special envoy Kofi Annan, and condemned any foreign action destined to incite more violence.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Ramin Mehmanparast, declined to mention countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar, supporters of supplying weapons to the opposition against Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, but emphasized in the validity of Annan’s plan.

According to Mehmanparast, the six-item plan presented by the former UN secretary general to end armed clashes is still the best way to solve the crisis,” and categorically refused some criteria that it is outdated.

“Such events seek to defeat Annan’s peace plan and impede the re-establishment of security and stability in Syria,” the spokesman said in his usual Tuesday’s news conference with national and foreign reporters.

Mehmanparast also insisted in the need to stop foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs, while he said this is the main factor to pave the way to implement “Annan’s peace plan.”

Teheran also expressed some criticisms to the opposition of the Ministerial Council of the Pan-Arab organization on Syria. During a meeting held on Sunday, July 22, in Doha, the country openly called Al-Assad to abandon power, with immunity guarantees for himself and his family.
