Washington, April 19, (RHC), — Meetings with senators and other officials at the U.S. Congress in Washington marked the first day of activities of the International Solidarity Meeting for the Cuban Five.
The multinational meeting of solidarity with Cuba and its five counterterrorism fighters held in the United States since their arrest in 1998 is organized by the International Committee to Free the Five.
According to the solidarity group, lobbying activities in the U.S. Congress continued on Wednesday as part of efforts to sensitize legislators and provide them with new information about the case of the Five.
This is the first time we delivered our message directly to congressional offices, said US photographer-filmmaker, Bill Hackwell.
Jorge Bolaños, head of the Cuban Interests Section in Washington, also took part in the activities and thanked all participants on behalf of the Cuban people and government.
Also on Wednesday, a discussion forum on the unfair and biased trial carried out against the Cuban heroes was held along the presentation of the book “What lies across the water: The real story of the Cuban Five” by Canadian author Stephen Kimber.
Likewise, the Nyumburu Cultural Center of the University of Maryland announced the display of the documentary “Will the Real Terrorist Please Stand Up?” by US filmmaker Saul Landau.
During the solidarity event, expected to run until April 21st, activists will also bring about awareness on the USblockade of Cuba, the travel ban. Among personalities scheduled to participate in the activities are Father Miguel D´Escoto, Nobel Peace Laureate Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Noam Chomsky, Danny Glover, Oliver Stone, Michael Moore, Cindy Sheehan, Angela Davis and Gayle McLaughlin.
Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez, and Rene Gonzalez, internationally known as the Cuban Five, were unjustly imprisoned in the U.S.in 1998. They are serving extremely long sentences for monitoring Florida-based ultra right-wing organizations that have carried out terrorist actions against Cuba.
