The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

Creating culture for socialism
During the month of April, this new year, the Eighth Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba will take place, where among other central questions to be analyzed is the functioning of the Party, its ties with the masses, ideological-political activity, and cadre policy, at a moment considered opportune for the updating of our strategy of resistance and development. Imagining this Congress in the light of the socio-political context of current Cuban society, brings to mind several very timely questions that I would like to submit to the consideration of readers in this article.

The glass was broken yesterday in the “showcase of democracy” with which the U.S. attempts to give the world lessons
The glass was literally broken yesterday in the “showcase of democracy” with which the United States has presumed to give the world lessons, when violent supporters of President Donald Trump invaded and disrupted the Capitol in Washington, the seat of Congress, as Representatives and Senators were preparing to confirm Democrat Joe Biden as the country’s next President. The assault on the Capitol is the most serious attack in the history of the building that symbolizes U.S. power, since the British set it on fire.

Achiever of the impossible
During this very tense, difficult year, in which we were obliged to confront COVID-19, as well as an unprecedented imperial offensive, Fidel has been at our side. Cuba’s response to the pandemic, here and in other countries around the world, has been admirable. As Díaz-Canel has reiterated, Fidel’s strategic thinking in the field of medicine and science, his extreme sensitivity to the most vulnerable and his deep conviction that nothing is worth more than the life of a human being, carried decisive weight in this victory.

Christmas reading: Notes on a not-so-plebian articulation
There are no witch hunts in Cuba, but neither is there impunity, since our decades of confrontation with imperialism have taught us to recognize double standards and wolves in sheepskin. During the recent holidays I commented to good friend that I was reading and rereading some texts outlining the sentiments and ideas of a small group of intellectuals who claim to represent the majority, in a manifesto they called “Plebian Articulation,” preparing to write about the issues they addressed. My friend suggested a title: “Christmas reading.”

2020: Year of the Cuban government, of science and the people
If at the end of 2019 a list of challenges to be faced in 2020 had been made, it would not be easy to conduct an accounting of how we had done, since Cuba does not establish ten-point agendas, but rather hundreds of objectives, on all fronts. And this was the year of obstacles. The speech President Miguel Díaz-Canel presented to the National Assembly of People’s Power, as 2019 drew to a close, identified several priorities that any citizen can use to determine to what extent projected goals were met, during the 365 days of 2020.

The freedom conquered in 1959 continues to illuminate the country
Fidel continues to command his rebel armies in a Freedom Caravan that has traveled across Cuba every January since 1959, making clear that the memory of that transcendental event in the country’s history continues to inspire new victories in the many battles Cubans face. The new “Caravanistas” from Santiago de Cuba initiated their journey, that will culminate on January 8, in Havana, from the city’s Avenida de los Libertadores, alongside the former Moncada Garrison, which became the July 26 Educational Center following the triumph of the Revolution.

The moment I learned of the Batista regime’s fall
Fidel had predicted that the Moncada Garrison would surrender its forces during the first days of January, 1959. I had been inside the fort in 1953, as a prisoner, along with other compañeros who attacked the Moncada. Fidel had been taken directly to the Santiago de Cuba Vivac. The story goes like this. I was at the Soledad sugar mill, now called the El Salvador, when I heard about the fall of Batista regime. At the time I was organizing the attack on the city of Guantánamo, on orders from Fidel.

The year we learned to look each other in the eye
2020 was literally and metaphorically the year we learned to look into each other’s eyes. January began with the Matanzas triumph in the National Baseball Series . Nobody knew it, but it would be missing and missing time so that we can meet again, side by side and jumping with euphoria. And no one knew that the same do not yell at a stadium a Home Run to slam would give the world a lesson in humanism and solidarity.
