The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

A festival for the visual arts too
The exhibition Síndrome del misterio by Fernando Reyna, and a concert by Venezuelan band La Dimensión Latina this Thursday, September 3, at the National Theater’s Avellaneda Hall, will open the second edition of the Habanarte Festival, which will run until the 13th of this month.

Santiago bids farewell to rumba
Yesterday the Rumba Trail arrived from Guan tánamo to the historic city of Santiago de Cuba where the cultural activity, which began in Pinar del Río continuing through to the eastern region of the island, concluded. La Casa del Caribe played host to the initiative with activities associated with the Tim ba laye Rumba Festival, a project led by dancers and teachers Ulises Mora and Irma Castillo, taking place on its grounds.

Díaz-Canel meets with Russian authorities
Cuban First Vice President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez arrived in Moscow yesterday en route to Beijing, and was received by Valentina Matvienko, President of the Russian Federation Council; Dimitri Rogozin, government vice president and co-president of the Russia-Cuba Intergovernmental Commission; as well as Ivan Mielnikov, first vice president of the Duma.

Cuban medical brigade departs for Dominica to treat victims of Erika
A 16-strong Cuban medical brigade including doctors, nurses and epidemiologists, together with three construction engineers and two electrical engineers, left for the Commonwealth of Dominica this Monday, where they will join the efforts to assist the victims of Tropical Storm Erika.

Yarisley Silva wins gold
This August 26, Cuba’s Yarisley Silva won gold in the pole vault event of the World Athletics Championships, while Brazil’s Fabiana Murer took the silver.
Silva cleared 4.90 meters on her third attempt winning her the gold medal, while Murer was only able to reach 4.85 meters, with Nicoleta Kyriakopoulou (4.80) of Greece, taking the bronze.

Tropical storm Erika approaching Cuba
he National Meteorological Institute’s Weather Forecast Center issued a category nine warning as Tropical Storm Erika approaches Cuba’s eastern region. Territories from Guantánamo to Ciego de Ávila are expect to experience heavy and localized rainfall this Saturday, in addition to strong winds and gusts which could reach up to 65–100 km/h as Erika moves north-westwards.

Book and Reading Festival to celebrate Elpidio Valdés’ birthday
The Book and Reading Festival will celebrate Elpidio Valdés’ 45th birthday next August 28 around La Maestranza Park in Old Havana. The event, organized every year by the Cuban Book Institute, has prepared a program that will start at 10 am with the awarding of the Elpidio Valdes’ films characters costumes competition and the contest ¿Quién sabe más de Elpidio Valdés?, in which the participating children should answer ten questions about the popular Cuban mambi fighter animated character.

Bolt & Pichardo make headlines at World Athletics Championships
Jamaica’s Usain Bolt and Cuban Pedro Pablo Pichardo made Latin American and Caribbean headlines today, after winning medals at the 2015 World Athletics Championships in Beijing. Bolt, six time Olympic champion, won the 200 meters and finished with his best time this year, 19.55 seconds.
