Cuban Antiterrorist Calls to Continue Struggle to free Cuban Five

Cuban anti-terrorist Rene Gonzalez, who is on probation in the United States, called to continue fighting for the release of his four fellow countrymen, who have been imprisoned in the United States since 1998. Rene Gonzalez, along with Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero and Gerardo Hernandez were severely condemned for reporting terrorist plans against Cuba, which were forged by terrorist groups based in the state of Florida.

Statement from the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five on the Release from Prison of René González

René González, one of the five men known as the Cuban Five, today will walk out of Federal Prison in Marianna, Florida. He will walk out with his head held high after more than 13 years in prison, having served his utterly unjust sentence with complete dignity. He has been a model prisoner, even while suffering the indignity of being inhumanely deprived visits from his wife for more than 11 years.

Lawyer: “Gerardo is being punished for something for which he is absolutely innocent”

Gerardo Hernandez, one of the Cuban Five submitted his request for a habeas corpus relief in March based on new evidence. He received the US reply on 25th April this year opposing his request. He has now submitted a reply with additional information. Radio Havana Cuba spoke to Richard Klugh, a member of the defence team for the Five by telephone to his office in Miami 23rd August 2011 for an up-date on Gerardo’s legal situation.

Cuba Remembers Gerardo on his 46th Birthday

Every year, the people celebrate the birthday of Gerardo Hernandez, one of the five anti-terrorist Cuban fighters unjustly held in U.S. prisons. “Cuba defends its sovereignty with honorable men like anti-terrorist fighter Gerardo Hernandez, who on his 46th birthday today is being unfairly held in a U.S. prison for warning Cuba of subversive plans hatched in south Florida,” Juan Miguel Diaz, chief of orthopedic services at Calixto Garcia Hospital, told Prensa Latina. “Gerardo has been in jail since 1998, far from his relatives and his homeland, but his incarceration will not break this upright fighter,” said Diaz, who has served on several internationalist brigades in African countries.

The Case of the Cuban Five and the Media

When the U.S. Government rejected Gerardo Hernández Nordelo’s Habeas Corpus petition on April 25, it did so very categorically, without leaving any margin of doubt. Washington wants the court in Miami to declare his petition inadmissible and to do so summarily, without holding a hearing to examine its merits, without hearing Gerardo, without presenting the evidence it is hiding. This is how it responded to the last legal recourse of a human being sentenced to two life terms plus 15 years.
