California’s Pelican Bay state prison

On the 1st of July, several dozen inmates at California’s Pelican Bay state prison began a hunger strike against the inhuman conditions at the Security Housing Unit [SHU, pronounced "shoe"] where one-third of the 3100 prisoners are locked up. In this maximum security facility, near the Oregon state border, convicts are locked in for more than 22 hours a day in windowless isolation cells, and can have little or no contact with other prisoners for years and sometimes decades.

Cuba Defeats Holland 4-1 in Rotterdam

Yadier Pedroso pitched a complete game to lead Cuba over Holland.

Coming off an embarrassing loss to Curacao on Friday, Cuba defeated the much tougher host Holland team on Sunday, by a score of 4-1 at the World Port Baseball Tournament in Rotterdam. Yadier Pedroso pitched a complete game allowing scattering five hits and striking out nine. He lost a shutout bid when Holland scored a lone run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization stepped up its air raids against western Libya, after attacking two civilian checkpoints in Khoms and the town of Nalut, and losing an unmanned helicopter near Zlitan. NATO planes and helicopters increased their incursions in support backing the armed uprising against Muammar Gaddafi, according to JANA news agency and Al Jamahiriya state television.
