The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

When the Hunger Strike is in the US
On the 1st of July, several dozen inmates at California’s Pelican Bay state prison began a hunger strike against the inhuman conditions at the Security Housing Unit [SHU, pronounced "shoe"] where one-third of the 3100 prisoners are locked up. In this maximum security facility, near the Oregon state border, convicts are locked in for more than 22 hours a day in windowless isolation cells, and can have little or no contact with other prisoners for years and sometimes decades.
A Brilliant and Courageous Statement
Now the external and internal enemies of Hugo Chávez are at the mercy of his words and his initiatives. Without a doubt there shall be surprises in store for them. Let us wish him our most steadfast support and trust. The lies of the empire and the treason of the quislings shall be defeated. Today there are millions of militant and aware Venezuelans who shall never be made to submit to the oligarchy and the empire.

Desperate Man Robs Store For One Dollar In Order To Go To Jail To Get Health Coverage
Verone didn’t want to scare anyone. He executed the robbery the most passive way he knew how. He handed the teller a note demanding one dollar, and medical attention. “I didn’t have any fears,” said Verone. “I told the teller that I would sit over here and wait for police.” Verone says he’s not a political man. But he has a lot to say on the subject of socialized medical care.

Empire of bases
Before reading this article, try to answer this question: How many military bases does the United States have in other countries: a) 100; b) 300; c) 700; or d) 1,000. According to the Pentagon’s own list PDF, the answer is around 865, but if you include the new bases in Iraq and Afghanistan it is over a thousand. These thousand bases constitute 95 percent of all the military bases any country in the world maintains on any other country’s territory. In other words, the United States is to military bases as Heinz is to ketchup.
