Today, when the United States and Iran are on the brink of an international conflict, the words of Fidel Castro Ruz have extraordinarily relevance.

Today, when the United States and Iran are on the brink of an international conflict, the words of Fidel Castro Ruz have extraordinarily relevance.

Message from Comandante en jefe Fidel Castro Ruz against nuclear war

The use of nuclear weapons in a new war would mean the end of humanity. This was foreseen by scientist Albert Einstein, who was able to measure their destructive capacity to produce heat of millions of degrees that would vaporize everything within a wide radius of impact. The brilliant researcher was the driving force behind the development of this weapon, before it was available to the genocidal Nazi regime.

All the world’s governments are obliged to respect the right to life of all nations and all peoples on the planet.

Today there is an imminent danger of war with the use of such weapons, and I have no doubt that an attack by the United States and Israel on the Islamic Republic of Iran would inevitably become a global nuclear conflict.

It is the duty of peoples to demand their right to live from political leaders. When the lives of the species, the people and their most loved ones are in such danger, no one can afford to be indifferent, nor can a minute be wasted in demanding respect for that right; tomorrow will be too late.

Albert Einstein himself said: “I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks andstones.” We know what he meant, and he was absolutely right, only that there would no longer be anyone to use sticks or stones.

There may be collateral damage, U.S. political and military leaders always say, to justify the death of innocent people.

In a nuclear war, the collateral damage would be human life.

Let us have the courage to proclaim that all nuclear and conventional weapons, everything that serves to wage war, must disappear!

Fidel Castro Ruz

DURING a meeting presided by Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, First Secretary of the Party Central Committee, a working group was established to prepare proposals to create an institution for the preservation of documentary heritage and the study and dissemination of the thought and work of Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro Ruz.

Some thirty experts from different specialties and representatives of various agencies, entities and institutions were called on to complete this challenging task, described by Raúl as of the utmost importance and which will be followed by the country’s leadership.

As explained by the First Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, in charge of overseeing the fulfillment of this task, the aim is to gather together and disseminate in an institution the valuable information that over the years has been collected on the activities of the Comandante en Jefe throughout his life, and that are part of the historical memory of the nation.

To this end, Presidential Decree No. 21 was announced, outlining the creation of the group of compañeros who will elaborate the ideas for the establishment of the aforementioned institution, presided by Alberto Alvariño Atiénzar, who on reporting on their work agenda, noted on behalf of all those present that they were assuming a historic task, of great political responsibility and to which they would completely devote themselves.

The Presidential Decree specifies that the proposals to be submitted should, among other matters, define the conceptual bases, principles, mission, functions and structure of the institution.

The decision is in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 123, of December 27, 2016, on the use of the name and figure of Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro Ruz, regarding the future naming of any institution that is created for the study of his invaluable contribution to the history of the nation.

After six years of work, the University of Havana’s Confucius Institute finally has a permanent headquarters, located in the building which was once home to the old Pacífico restaurant, an emblematic structure in the capital’s China Town.

The completely renovated facility was inaugurated October 14, in a ceremony which saw the participation of Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, first vice president of Cuba’s Councils of State and Ministers.

During the inauguration, Arsenio Alemán, director of the Confucius Institute (IC), thanked the Teach Chinese as a Foreign Language Office, the Beijing Language and Culture University, as well as the Cuban and Chinese entities that participated in the project.

Zhang Tuo, ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Cuba, also in attendance at the ceremony, emphasized the historical significance of the Pacífico building, which he described as “witness to the friendship and cultural exchanges between the two peoples.”

Likewise, the diplomat highlighted the role of the IC in disseminating the culture and language of his country; while also expressing his desire that more people study the language of Confucius, and his certainty that “this institute will play an even more important role in strengthening relations between China and Cuba.”

The works undertaken by the IC over the past six years (beginning November 2009) have already borne fruit with the new headquarters representing the consolidation of these achievements. In the medium-term the institution is expected to receive the necessary resources to fully exploit the renovated building.

The academic center acts as a bridge to understanding the millennium-old culture and history of the Asian nation, while also offering students the opportunity to study in the country.

The Institute is home to one of the country’s most comprehensive and up-to-date libraries on China. It also has audiovisual and informative materials on the country’s education system, economic situation and culture.

Of the 11 professors who work at the institute, six are affiliated with Beijing Language and Culture University. The rest are Cuban educators who have studied the language in China.

The IC currently accepts 500 students who are also taught the values and customs of this sister nation.

The IC aims to double its enrollment quota, and from its new headquarters “disseminate the greatest contributions of Chinese culture and history in this city. It will be a place where the fraternal relationship between the Communist parties of Cuba and China finds a place to strengthen itself,” according to Dr. Gustavo Cobreiro, rector of the University of Havana.
