Also read at the event was a message from President Raúl Castro Ruz congratulating Juventud Rebelde on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

As a celebration of Fidel’s 89th birthday and International Youth Day, the newspaper presented the exhibit of 50 images taken by its photographers, which truly synthesize the historic leader’s personality.

Yoerky Sánchez, the newspaper’s information official, commented, “In these images his youthful, rebellious spirit is palpable, his permanent link with the young, his preoccupation with conveying ideas to the people, the warmth of his physical presence at a moment of sadness when a friend dies, or a joyful moment embracing a compatriot…”

Among the many figures attending the inauguration were Party Central Committee members Rolando Alfonso Borges and Jorge Risquet Valdés; Yuniasky Crespo Baquero, first secretary of the Young Communists League (UJC); Armando Hart Dávalos, president of the José Martí Cultural Society; Eusebio Leal, Havana City Historian; Antonio Moltó, president of the Union of Cuban Journalists; and writer Graciela Pogolotti.
