With the same foundational objectives focused on representing university students and forging a new society, the FEU arrived at its 95th anniversary “immersed in an electoral process with the challenge of building continuity and honored to follow the example of Fidel Castro, with some 125,000 members throughout the country,” expressed Raúl Alejandro Palmero Fernández, national president of the organization, speaking earlier this week on the Mesa Redonda television program.

The FEU’s “first function is its duty to students in all its organizational structures. We maintain as our primary objectives the strengthening of the brigade, the cell of the organization, on which its good functioning, success and future depend. The organization’s capacity for renewal depends on this,” he added.

Palmero also noted that the FEU “has been in charge of taking the best of university arts, culture and sport beyond our borders.” Book launches, artistic performances, tours with sports stars, ballet classes, the national university system, salsa and book festivals, and the undertaking of tasks with a social impact, such as communicational campaigns in the media, including the television program ¿Quién Vive?, which attempts to show the best of university arts and life, are all demonstrative of the FEU’s efforts beyond the classroom.

Meanwhile, Anabel Treto de la Paz, FEU president at the Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences, noted during the same television broadcast that, “The 66,000 medical sciences students in the country welcome this 95th anniversary with the commitment to study to provide health care with the quality that the people deserve.”

The firm decision of students in attendance to uphold the banner of socialism and the ideas of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution was reiterated in speeches, chants, and signs.

FEU President and member of the Council of State, Jennifer Bello Martínez, commented, “This 94th anniversary has a special connotation as the first without the presence of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, and we decided to dedicate it to this eternal youth, of whose legacy we will be continuators. He always placed his confidence in university students, always debated any idea he had with university students, because he knew that this is where the reliable rearguard was, in revolutionary processes.”

She noted that Cienfuegos had earned the honor of being the site of the celebration with the pace of its efforts to implement plans made during the organization’s 8th Congress. The student leader concluded saying that 2017 would be a busy year for the FEU, as chapters mobilize members to contribute to all the tasks the country is undertaking.

The program of actions on the FEU’s anniversary will include all Cuban universities, which will hold social, sports, cultural and recreational events, said the organization’s president, Carlos Rangel, quoted by the newspaper Juventud Rebelde. As part of the festivities, the FEU’s National Council will meet in Havana for two days, starting on Wednesday, to debate the students’ academic and research life and the attention to professors in training and university extension.

They will also review the internal work of the FEU, which was founded on December 20, 1922, by Cuban revolutionary Julio Antonio Mella, who became its president the following year.
