The Seattle City Council (Washington state) requested that President Joe Biden reverse the inclusion of Cuba on the spurious list. The resolution, signed by Seattle City Clerk Monica Martinez Simmons, also calls for initiating collaboration with the island in the area of health.

The resolution additionally states that the Seattle City Council encourages local medical, health care, scientific, academic and pharmaceutical institutions to actively explore collaboration with their Cuban counterparts in the transfer of knowledge and joint collaboration between Seattle-King County health care workers, innovation treatments and development of new treatments, vaccines and protocols.

Martínez-Simmons noted that Cuba has a tradition of sharing its knowledge with other nations, and citing as an example the work of numerous medical brigades in various parts of the world.

The text also calls for an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade the U.S. has maintained against Cuba for almost six decades.

A number of other U.S. cities and institutions have stated their opposition to the blockade, as well, while in 2020, more than 14 cities expressed the desire to collaborate with Cuba in combating covid-19, including San Francisco, Richmond and Berkeley.

The Cuban singer-songwriter, widely known in Latin America for his progressive, leftist positions, thus joins dozens of activists, personalities, parliamentarians and intellectuals who support the nomination of Cuban health professionals to receive the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of their solidarity and humanist work in nations around the world battling the COVID-19 epidemic.

In this regard, prominent U.S. linguist and political scientist Noam Chomsky recently stated that Cuba is the only country that has shown genuine internationalism during the crisis generated by the coronavirus.

According to established norms, nominations for recognition can only be made by parliamentarians, academics, judges in international courts, individuals who have received the prize and active or retired members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, and must be submitted by January 31 each year.

“This brigade has done exemplary work providing coverage (…) in all this sister republic’s public institutions. The results achieved make us proud to have you as part of this army of white coats which has given a resounding demonstration of solidarity in these difficult times,” the President stated to the 49 doctors who arrived in Havana January 23, a group including 20 women and 29 men from 12 provinces and the Isle of Youth special municipality, of whom 20 are specialists in General Comprehensive Medicine, one in Epidemiology, two in Clinical Laboratory, two in Imaging and two in Electromedicine, in addition to 22 registered nurses.

During a virtual meeting with members of the Henry Reeve Contingent who returned home recently, the president described Washington’s efforts to denigrate Cuba’s health collaboration as deceitful, slanderous and threatening.

He also highlighted the important work of solidarity and cooperation that the Cuban brigades do in other parts of the world, on the basis of the principles of the Cuban Revolution.

‘A failed (Donald) Trump administration is giving its death throes and has devoted itself to impose ridiculous sanctions on our country in the last three days,’ the head of State noted.

Diaz-Canel underlined that ‘one of the most despicable actions is the inclusion (of Cuba) in the unilateral list of state sponsors of terrorism’.

He stressed that Cuba delivers cooperation, humanism, love and saves lives, ‘all these overcome and defeat that fallacy’.

As the Campaign of Solidarity with Cuba in the United Kingdom reported on Saturday, Tarry, who is a Labor MP from Ilford South, highlighted, in his letter to the Norwegian committee, the humanitarian and solidarity work done by the members of Cuba’s Henry Reeve Medical Contingent.

In that regard, he pointed out that since the Henry Reeve Contingent was founded in 2005, its members have provided medical aid in 45 countries affected by natural disasters and epidemics, and have assisted almost four million people, regardless of political borders.

Tarry particularly recalled the work the brigade did in fighting a cholera outbreak in West Africa in 2014, and congratulated the Cuban health workers who are currently fighting the Covid-19 pandemic in different regions of the world.

In opinion of the Labor politician, granting the Nobel Peace Prize to the Cuban health workers would be a worthy recognition of their wonderful humanitarian work.

In addition to the 20 British MPs, including three members of the House of Lords, who formally nominated the Cuban doctors, eight UK academics also sent their petitions to the Norwegian committee.

Some 48 employees of the Henry Reeve International Contingent of Specialized Doctors in Disaster Situations and Serious Epidemics, who provided assistance in Venezuela in the fight against SARS-CoV-2, returned to the country this Friday.

From the temporary working group to confront COVID-19, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, President of the Republic, welcomed them and pointed out that this brigade worked under complex conditions in six regions of the Venezuelan geography, where they also contributed to the recovery of Cuban health personnel infested with the virus.

He stressed that for the work carried out they were recognized by the government and the authorities of the territories where they were. The president reiterated his satisfaction for the return of the Cubans to the Homeland and said that once the quarantine period was over, he would meet with them.

Fidel Alejandro Rivero Truit, specialist in intensive care and coordinator of the group in the state of Zulia, told the press that on September 11, when they arrived in the sister country, the situation was difficult due to the increase in cases and the high number of patients in serious and critical condition.

The situation was reversed thanks to the joint effort of the Cuban medical mission in Venezuela and the Henry Reeve Contingent, he added.

We managed to reduce the number of complications and patients affected by the pandemic, especially the most serious ones, in addition to attending to Cuban health collaborators, said the specialist with seven missions abroad.

José Luis Sánchez Pérez, a nursing graduate, commented that they went to Venezuela with the purpose of saving as many lives as possible, a task that was accomplished based on the professionalism, dedication and dedication of the health personnel.

He affirmed that the experience during the Ebola epidemic in West Africa helped him not to trust himself before this silent enemy and to be more prepared.

The Cuban doctors in Venezuelan lands treated 1,087 patients and carried out 28,068 nursing procedures.

They also participated in health education and health education sessions, in addition to offering advice to the Bolivarian nation’s personnel regarding protocols to combat COVID-19.

The brigade was made up of 13 nursing graduates and 32 specialists in intensive therapy, internal medicine, anesthesia, hygiene and epidemiology, pulmonology, nephrology and cardiology; who made 670 specialized consultations and 42 hemodialysis sessions.

The work in caring for positive patients earned them the Order of Merit of the Bolivarian Physician Dr. Gilberto Rodríguez Ochoa, and the April 16 and Gold stamps.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Cuba has sent 55 brigades of the Henry Reeve Contingent to 40 countries, currently 38 are active with a total of 2,544 collaborators.

In these months, the professionals of this medical force have treated 1,090,799 people in Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, Africa and Asia.

Labor parliamentarian Richard Burgon became the tenth British legislator on Monday to formally nominate the Henry Reeve Brigade of Cuban international doctors for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.

I am very, very happy and proud to have officially nominated Cuban doctors, nurses and technicians for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of their work and the humanitarianism they have shown in the fight against the coronavirus, and in emergency health situations around the world for the past 15 years, Burgon said on a video posted by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign (CSC).

In his letter of recommendation to the Norwegian committee in charge of granting the international prize, the representative to the British Parliament for the English district of Leeds East, highlighted that the Caribbean island has a long history of providing humanitarian assistance to other countries after the triumph of the Revolution of 1959.

In May 1960, shortly after an exodus of doctors after the Cuban Revolution, a medical team was sent to Chile to help in the aftermath of an earthquake, he recalled.

According to Burgon, those guiding principles of health as a human right, the right to peace and life, humanism and solidarity support the monumental efforts of the Henry Reeve Brigade, which, since its foundation in 2005, has saved tens of thousands of lives in countries hit by natural disasters and epidemics such as cholera and Ebola.

The Henry Reeve Brigade has made an unparalleled contribution to global health, which has never deserved so much acknowledgement and praise as at this time of global health emergency, he stressed.

In addition to the ten or so British lawmakers, seven UK scholars made similar requests to the Norwegian committee.

Apart from the formal requests, the CSC made an online petition in favor of acknowledgement for Cuban health workers that has accumulated so far more than 6,700 signatures of support.

According to the rules of the Swedish Academy, nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize can only be made by parliamentarians, scholars, magistrates of international courts, people already awarded, and active or retired members of the committee, and have a deadline on February 1 of each year.
