The latest and outrageous episode of the judicial and media war against Cristina Fernández de Kirchner is making the right wing pay a high political cost, incapable of calculating the reserves of political energy accumulated in the people. It is not idle to remember the prosecutor’s request to the accused: 12 years in prison and lifetime disqualification from holding public office.

Without the prosecutor presenting a single piece of evidence, the right planned to get rid of the indomitable popular leader, fend off her plans to plunder natural resources –lithium in the first place– and dismantle the political, social and cultural rights won during the Kirchner governments. Plans, it should be underlined, that are of the greatest interest to the United States, as has been more than demonstrated, but was once again made clear in the recent interventionist statement by Marc Stanley, that country’s ambassador in Buenos Aires.

The most important characteristic of leaders of Cristina’s stature is that of making large collective subjects feel represented by them. When it comes to Argentina, this phenomenon is necessarily and inevitably colored by Peronism, the political identity that –with its marked contradictions– has given way to national progress towards the goals of social justice, democracy, national sovereignty and Latin American and Caribbean unity. It is easy to understand, therefore, that since the first government of Juan Domingo Perón, the main political objective of the Buenos Aires oligarchy and US imperialism has been the elimination of Peronism, especially in its aspects closest to popular desires. To achieve this today, Cristina’s political ban is a fundamental step. What did not cross the minds of the designers of the judicial-media execution against her is the enormous popular solidarity that it would unleash in her favor.

The attack against Cristina stimulated spontaneous mobilizations throughout the country, even in provinces such as Córdova and Rosario, without Peronist lineage. Meanwhile, in Buenos Aires, the self-convened gathered at the corner of Uruguay and Juncal streets, where the building where the vice president resides stands. As Stella Calloni stated when reviewing the unexpected popular overflow (La Jornada, Mundo section, 8/29), although it may seem so, people have not forgotten the achievements of the 12 years of Néstor and Cristina’s government.

But then came the second and serious error from the macrista field. Faced with the energetic but joyful and peaceful reaction of solidarity towards Cristina from young people, the elderly, workers and residents of disadvantaged neighborhoods, the right-wing government of the city of Buenos Aires found no other response than repression, using its police force. In an illegal action, they fenced off the aforementioned corner at dawn from Friday to Saturday and surrounded it with a shock police group, supported by hydrant trucks, and then attacked the mobilized with sticks, water jets and mustard gas grenades. Which in turn caused the indignation of those gathered there to increase and new groups to come. In a provocative attitude, plainclothes policemen took photos of the attendees, another illegal act, and harassed, pushed and insulted legislators and officials of the governing Front of All who had been present.

It was probably their presence and the pressure exerted by the federal government that prevented the incident from escalating further. The fact of the dump trucks with stones found by the protesters already used by the macrismo to arm provocateurs when it occupied the Casa Rosada is not minor. In this situation, it transpired that former President Macri and the president of the PRO (party of the former right-wing president), Patricia Bullrich, censured the capital’s head of government, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, for not having been tougher against the protesters.

It should not be surprising then that, as Cristina suggested, it was Bullrich herself who, when the 2001 crisis broke out, suggested to President De la Rúa that he declare a state of siege, which – I add – led to the murder of 39 protesters. As an attendee at the last luncheon of the PRO leaders (Macri’s party) confided to Page 12, Bullrich called for repression, corchazos with rubber bullets and recalled: “As I did during our government.”

Beyond the presidential ambitions and competition to be the toughest of Macri, Larreta and Bullrich, his words should not be taken lightly. The Argentine situation has become hopeful, yes. But the elections are more than a year away. Victory with IMF adjustment will not be easy, even if measures are taken to protect the most vulnerable. It is essential to preserve and strengthen Peronist unity and combativeness driven by popular affection for Cristina and her leadership.

After the Buenos Aires authorities placed fences on Saturday to block the way to the residence of Vice President Cristina Fernández, the protesters tore them down and there were clashes with the police, who used tear gas and rubber bullets. President Alberto Fernández warned on Twitter that it is imperative that “the harassment” against the vice president cease.

In a desperate attempt to besiege Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, the governor of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, ordered fences to be put up in front of the vice president’s home and ordered a security operation with infantry guard included to dissuade the militancy to approach.

“But the shot backfired and the thousands of people who were going to gather in Parque Lezama from 3:00 p.m. and in other places went to Recoleta to express their support for CFK,” published the newspaper Pagina 12 .

According to the reports of that and other media, upon learning of the installation of the billboards, many chose to suspend the planned protests in different parts of the city to spontaneously join the shows of support for the president who for at least four days take place in the vicinity of your residence.

“When it was 15 minutes to five in the afternoon, a little hell broke loose. The contingents of people continued to arrive at Plaza Vicente López, many from the suburbs and the interior, but the infantry also did the same, pressing from behind. At one point, a group of protesters began to kick the fences and when some managed to get through, the three rows of police officers and the watering truck behind them began to repress.

“In the first line of fire were many leaders who, in the midst of the chaos, managed to enter through the space that had been opened between the fences, thus enabling them to finish running and the huge crowd was able to cross the border and approach to the vice president’s house.

“The city police also fired tear gas and a few noises from rubber bullets were heard,” reported Page 12.

“I express my strongest rejection of the institutional violence unleashed by the City Government in the face of a massive demonstration of citizens expressing themselves freely and in democracy,” President Alberto Fernández said through his social networks, denouncing that the police operation generated “a climate of insecurity and intimidation.”

The president affirmed that it is imperative “that the harassment cease” against the vice president and guarantee the freedom of expression and demonstration of citizens.

The governor of the province of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof, described this Sunday as a “blunder” the repression of the City Police on the protesters in front of the vice president’s home and denounced that with this the macristas demonstrate that “the violent are they”.

“What happened yesterday was a provocation, at no time did they want to take care of the vice president,” the governor told a radio station in Buenos Aires.

Also this Sunday, the Minister of Public Works, Gabriel Katopodis, warned that “they are not going to charge” Vice President Cristina Fernández and “they are not going to erase Peronism.”

He affirmed that the only place where there was repression during the demonstrations in support of the former president was in the city of Buenos Aires, where the head of government Horacio Rodríguez Larreta mounted a provocation with the erection of the billboards.

In dialogue with FM Futurock, Katopodis maintained that there are sectors of the Judiciary and the opposition that “want a country without Peronism” because “they do not tolerate an economy that continues to grow.”

After pointing out that “we came from very calm, very happy, very peaceful mobilizations”, Katopodis affirmed that the head of the Buenos Aires Government “put his internal before” and sought to “please” former President Mauricio Macri and his electorate, for which “he overreacted and armed this repressive operation”.

“They generate these moments that are so violent and absolutely unnecessary,” the official denounced. “They underestimated us, they thought that if they killed Cristina, Peronism would last them 15 minutes,” he said during the interview.

“Not only are they not going to remove Cristina, but they are not going to erase Peronism. We are going to continue representing and exercising the role that our militancy and the people have entrusted to us”, he added, and regarding the opposition, he pointed out that “they want to rewrite history and erase Peronism, it is always the same intolerance”.

A video from this Saturday went viral in which it can be seen how the deputy the national deputy and son of Cristina, Máximo Kirchner, is attacked and prevented from going to the residence of the vice president.

The images show the moment when, accompanied by a group of people, the leader of the Frente de Todos tries to pass through a group of troops to reach his mother’s house, in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Recoleta, but they prevent him from doing so. step and hit him, while insults are also heard in the background.

“Do you want to come in, Maximo? The c … of your mother you are going to pass ”, someone who is among the police can be heard saying, but his face is not seen in the videos, published Page 12.
Before tens of thousands of demonstrators outside her house, the Argentine vice president stated late at night: “I want to tell you that even if I live 1,000 years, I will never be able to thank you for the love, solidarity and loyalty of all of you. Believe me, at this point in my life, there is nothing more important than that.”

She pointed out that “since the day the judicial party requested a 12-year sentence for each year of the best 12 years that the Argentine people had, demonstrations have taken place throughout the country. However, the only place where there were scenes of violence was here, in CABA and at the door of my house.”

“Then they say that we are the violent ones,” she said, and she recalled the episodes of violence at the door of her house when she left the presidency in 2015 or in the demonstrations against the current national government, with body bags, guillotines and gallows.

“The degree of cynicism and perversion of not taking charge of what they want is incredible: to exterminate Peronism,” she added, and accused the opposition of “competing for who is the toughest.”

“Let’s not repeat experiences that we all later regret, there has already been too much blood in Argentina,” she warned, and thanked the militancy for being present since noon and sent them to “rest.”

“I feel that they are all a bit of my children, I love them with all my heart,” she said.

“I only ask that we never abandon our convictions, especially that indestructible love of country,” she concluded.

More than 5,000 detainees, barely 200 survivors, in 2,818 days of dictatorship, are the macabre numbers that mark the “record” of terror behind the walls of the former Navy Petty-Officers School, the fearsome ESMA, one of the dictatorship’s largest secret centers of detention, torture and extermination.

Moving through the hustle and bustle of the city, still excited by the inauguration of President Alberto Fernandez and Vice President Cristina Fernandez, several men and women, tremendously happy for the their country’s new dawn, returned to the concentration camp where they were detained and tortured in their youth.

They were Ana, Néstor, Silvia, Mercedes, Ricardo, Graciela, Silvia, Alfredo, and Vera, the mother, 92 years of age, who lost her daughter Franca at 18, in an ESMA cell or perhaps in the flights of death. Little is known. They returned to the place that tore them apart, but this time with a different connotation – to accompany the President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, through every corner of the barbarism.

The President said he felt it was his duty to make the visit, when he met them in one of the museum’s offices, with his companion, Lis Cuesta, waiting for him to arrive after a meeting with President Fernandez.

“Your agreeing to join me is beyond all my expectations. You have all of Cuba’s recognition and support; you are part of the energy that helps us every day to resist and triumph.”

“It will be a difficult journey,” warned Alejandra Naftal, director of the ESMA Memory Museum, before the tour began, “But this place is a victory for Argentines, the result of more than 40 years of struggle. It is not about death, but about life, respect, even for the indifferent who still deny everything that happened.

“A crime against humanity was committed here,” she stated, before President Díaz-Canel and his delegation began their walk through one of the most painful symbols of the dictatorship that Argentina endured between 1976 and 1983.

In what was the ESMA Officers Casino, the survivors recalled, for the President, details of the hell where they were taken after being abducted, blind-folded with thick black cloth, hand-cuffed, lying practically all the time in a space measuring 70 centimeters by two meters, with their heads always toward the corridor, to be seen by the guards, suffering suffocating temperatures, relieving themselves whenever their captors decided.
With his voice choking, the Cuban President told his hosts, victims of the terror, after two hours at the ESMA, Photo: Estudios Revolución

Silvia showed him the miserable place where she gave birth to her daughter. They were together for only a week, before the baby was “fortunately” given to her grandmother. At her side, to relive the story, was Mercedes, the young woman who helped her give birth amidst the terror. Today, a question is written on one of the room’s walls: How is it possible that children were born here? Silvia’s little girl could answer.

The Cuban President learned of the atrocities in the voices of the victims; and of the pentothal given the “condemned” to numb them before they were thrown alive into the Plata River; of the so-called road of happiness that led to the torture room; of the electric prod used to kill; and of the screams they attempted to drown out with blazing music; of the women raped; of forced labor; of mock executions… all of this while daily life continued for authorities at the school, who years later would say they did not “notice” what was happening on the premises. Really?

The tour ended in the hall where information on all the detainees was processed. Today, more than four decades later, the names of the murderers are projected on its walls, many of them labeled “convicted.”

After two hours at the ESMA, with his voice choking, the Cuban President told his hosts, the victims of this terror, “You are light and dawn. There is enormous testimony here to what cruelty is, of what murder is, of what abuse is, of what the violation of human rights is; of what is harmful, what is perverse, of what is dreadful about military dictatorships… You cannot imagine what you have given us in terms of feelings, in revolutionary convictions,” he said.

“This is something we will remember all our lives,” the President stated, and referring to the missing youth as “the generation of my age,” he added, “We are not going to forget them. We came to this inauguration – and we explained this to President Alberto Fernandez – to tell you that you have the support of Cuba, that you have the respect of Cuba, that you have the friendship and solidarity of Cuba. Together we are going to walk the path of victory for Latin America.”

“At the solidarity event, I said, as in Fito’s song, to whoever says that all is lost, Cuba comes to give our heart.”

Thus, taking on greater meaning are the words of Graciela, one of the survivors who, before the tour, said: “When we were imprisoned, Cuba was our beacon. To be talking with you today is proof that we defeated them.”

Our marvelous city, ancient, cheerful, spectacular, continues to captivate with its charm all those who visit. Argentine actor Gastón Pauls was in Cuba for the first time in the 2000 and fervently insists that he makes films to come to Havana. “Nineteen years ago I had the opportunity to open the festival with the presence of Fidel in the front row; it was very moving,” and since then, he has come 17 times.

Pauls began his relationship with the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema with the film Nueces para el amor, which on that occasion won the Grand Coral for the best film of the event.

He remembers how surprised he was, on that trip, “to see how Cubans lived and watched a movie. There is no place in the world that has that level of passion, knowledge and love for Latin American cinema, and I couldn’t believe it.”

In 2019, he arrives with El Príncipe, which is competing in the debut section, and La espuma de los días, as part of the exhibition América en perspectiva. Referring to the latter, directed by Fernando Timossi, he confesses that his greatest satisfaction was playing a Cuban character and collaborating with “first-rate” actors such as Corina Mestre, Liéter Ledesma, Alicia and Fernando Hechavarría. “I am very proud and happy because Latin American cinema always costs a great deal, and every film that is released is a victory.”

El Príncipe is a co-production by Chile, Argentina and Belgium, “a film that takes place in a prison, and where paradoxically many men can be free.” It is a reflection on a society where prejudice and homophobic postures still persist, which Pauls proudly presents in this festival, for him, “a beacon since its creation, because when there were many military dictatorships across Latin America, this was the place where the darkness could be stated, denounced, and brought to light. Today, when the right wing wants to ride hard and in many places the media is carrying out coups, the festival has more power than it did 40 years ago.”

Pauls has always valued Latin American cinema. “For me it is cinema about the world, made by Latin Americans, it is how we see and how we see ourselves. The maxim this year rightly states that in several Latin American countries people are being blinded, so our cinema has the duty to continue observing and telling what it sees.”
he duty to continue observing and telling what it sees.”

The President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, began his third day of activities in this South American city with a meeting, in the Eva Perón room of the Casa Rosada, with Argentine President Alberto Fernández.

The President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, began his third day of activities in this South American city with a meeting, in the Eva Perón room of the Casa Rosada, with Argentine President Alberto Fernández.

According to Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, the island’s foreign minister, on his official Twitter account, during the talks the two leaders both emphasized their willingness to strengthen bilateral relations and the historic ties of friendship shared by their peoples, as well as the importance of promoting economic and commercial relations.

The dialogue took place yesterday, Wednesday, a few hours after Fernandez was inaugurated as head of state, and reflects the importance that the two governments attach to their relations, given the longstanding, common history their countries share.

The Casa Rosada official website also reported news of the meeting, noting that the two Presidents highlighted the importance of increasing commerce in the food and pharmaceutical sectors, with special emphasis on the latter, especially generic medicines for the elderly in Argentina, while expanding collaboration in technology and research.

President Fernandez stated, “We will advance in mutual cooperation” to strengthen cultural and sporting exchanges,” adding, “We have a brotherly commitment to Cuba.”

Argentine Foreign Minister Felipe Solá and Deputy Cabinet Chief Cecilia Todesca also participated in the meeting.

Shortly before concluding his working visit in Argentina and returning to Havana, Wednesday afternoon, Díaz-Canel met with Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner at the National Congress. Given the friendship that unites them and the mutual admiration they share for their respective countries, the words of the two leaders were especially cordial and respectful.

On December 11, as a new dawn beaks in the homeland of San Martín, relations between Cuba and Argentina are also stronger. These two meetings make this clear.

Buenos Aires, Argentina – Last night, heartfelt words abounded, when the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, attended a meeting in this city with members of the community of Cubans living in Argentina, as has become customary during his trips abroad.

What began with the national anthem, and continued with Alexander Abreu’s “Me dicen Cuba,” ended as a meeting between brothers and sisters, who – within and beyond the island – confirmed their love for the country. Díaz-Canel stated, “I invite you to defend Cuba with renewed strength, because the Homeland is all of us.”

He shared with participants the certainty that the strengthening of ties between the island and Cubans living abroad is an ongoing, irreversible process, a spirit reflected in the successive updates of migration policy in 2013, 2016 and 2018, the President noted.

“The measures adopted during the Presidency of Army General Raúl Castro Ruz and currently, confirm the continuity of this process,” he continued.

He commented on the annual increase in the number of Cubans who travel abroad and return to the country; as well as the number of Cubans residing permanently abroad who apply to regain this status in Cuba.

As an example of the close ties that the country’s maintains with Cubans living around the world, he mentioned the successful scholarship program for the Cuban émigré community, through which their children can benefit. “To date, 124 scholarships have been awarded in 41 countries, and 61 students have graduated,” he said.

Emphasizing the defense of the homeland as a priority in meetings of Cubans living abroad, he reported that the IV Regional Meeting of Cubans residing in Latin America and the Caribbean, was held October 19-20 in Mexico City, with 75 delegates from 13 countries participating.
